Surbhi Chawla, Junior Editor at News Nation explains the importance of Journalism through her Journey

Since childhood, I was encircled by a media atmosphere. My father is a senior journalist at Amar Ujala, and my Uncle is a news anchor in a renowned media house, News18 India. Hi! All. My name is Surbhi Chawla & I am from Haryana. I used to see my father and uncle(his elder brother) work dedicatedly towards serving the public by covering all possible news day & night. Being a grown-up now, I still find no difference in their zeal for work. This inspired me to join a notable media house as I had a passion for reading and writing that was naturally in my blood and obvious.

My Higher Secondary Results were out & I was impatiently searching for the best Media Institute to give a flight to my dreams. In the education market where we can see a number of colleges & universities providing excellence in academics, I was referred to join Quantum University, , Roorkee by one of my relatives. I took admission in BA (Hons) Journalism & Mass Communication and couldn’t control my excitement to start with my media journey. I got the opportunity to learn all aspects of journalism and media like Print, Radio, Photography, PR, Advertising, TV & Newspaper, etc. Under the guidance of faculty & experts, our practical sessions were entertaining and requisite for carving the skills of the students who aim to be future media professionals.

During our last semester, we had to go for our internship program. I was lucky to get selected as a junior reporter intern at Samachar India. I used all the skills taught to me in the university that undoubtedly proved to be fruitful during my internship. My colleagues were impressed and praised me by saying that they see a future journalist in me. I got to learn how TV media works. I got familiar with PCR (Production Control Room), and other terms used in TV Journalism like VoiceOver, Sound Bite, Attribution, Bridge, etc.

Many companies were a part of the placement drive in the university that had come to shortlist the students for the required job profiles. Media companies that came for the placements of the students were Aptara, Amar Ujala, News Nation, Daikin Jagran, etc. My dreams were big and I wanted to work as my father in a senior position. But what all requires is hard work & patience. I got interviewed by the team of News Nation and cleared all the interview rounds. I was happy to be appointed as a Sub Editor in News Nation.

It has been four years now and my consistency and hard work have paid off. I work as a Junior Editor in News Nation. Along with my profession, I do train interns and my juniors who join us with the hope to live up to their dreams in the media industry. But my dreams don’t end here. Journalism is a wide field and the scope is infinite. I am continuously working towards upgrading myself and reaching the rank that my father has always dreamt of me achieving, the post of “ Senior Editor.”
