What is JEE, and What are its Types?
As described above, the Joint Entrance Exam or JEE is conducted for a competitive entry into prestigious engineering schools, which lets students access job-oriented courses. The test is conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for admissions to:
- 23 Indian Institutes of Technology
- 31 National Institutes of Technology
- 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology
- Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)
Types of JEE
There are two types of JEE tests for getting an IIT JEE rank:
- JEE Main
- JEE Advanced
The first stage is the JEE Main test, and the students who pass it are eligible to appear in JEE Advanced and secure an IIT JEE rank. Those who pass JEE Main enter engineering colleges other than the IITs. You’re eligible to get into IITs only after passing the JEE Advanced. The NTS conducts JEE Main, while IITs themselves conduct JEE Advanced, after which the IIT JEE rank is announced.
IIT JEE Eligibility Criteria in 2023
There are multiple eligibility criteria that a candidate needs to meet to appear in the test and secure an IIT JEE rank, which are discussed below:
Age Criteria
There are no age limits to appear in JEE (Main) in 2023 for candidates who have passed 12/equivalent examinations in 2021 & 2022 or appearing in 2023. However, different institutes have their own age criteria, and candidates must meet them to get admission.
State Criteria
The State code of eligibility refers to the code of the State where the candidate has passed their 12/equivalent exams. However, it is irrelevant where the candidate was born. For instance, if they were born in Uttar Pradesh but passed the exams from an institute in Calcutta, their State code of eligibility will be from Calcutta and NOT from Uttar Pradesh.
- If they passed their first exams from one State but appeared for improvement in another, their State code of eligibility will be from the State where they first appeared.
- Those passing class 12 from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) should check their eligibility according to the State of their study center.
- The State of Indian nationals from Nepal/Bhutan is determined based on the permanent address mentioned on their passport.
- The State code eligibility for Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) is similar to that for Indian nationals. Those passing the class 12 exams from a foreign institution are eligible for Other State quota seats and All India quota seats. However, they’re ineligible for Home State quota seats.
Year of Appearance
- Those who have passed the class 12 exams in 2021 & 2022, or showing up in 2023, are qualified to apply for JEE (Main).
- Those who have passed grade 12 exams in 2020 or before or those who will appear in 2024 are ineligible.
Qualifying Exams
- A 10+2 final exam conducted by a recognized Central/State Board
- Two-year course from the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy
- Senior Secondary School Examination from NIOS with at least five subjects
- Any foreign qualification is equivalent to the 10+2 system in India, determined by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
- Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination
- GCE at the A Levels
Exam Pattern

Application Form
The IIT JEE exam forms for appearing in the Session 1 of the Main Exam of 2023 are available on the official website of the Department of Higher Education for download. The last date for application form submission for Session 2 is February 7, 2023.

JEE 2023 Exam Date
Session 1:
January 24, 25, 28, 29, 30, 31, & February 1, 2023.
Session 2:
