Roorkee: 2023 being recognized as the International Year of Millets, the Government of India is raising awareness and supporting the production and consumption of these nutritious grains through a range of interactive activities such as quizzes, recipe sharing, and slogan contests nationwide. As a part of this global initiative, the Department of Applied Medical Sciences and Hotel Management at Quantum University, joined forces to pioneer a special event—the Millet-based Food Stall Competition. This unique endeavor not only showcased the art of cooking with millets but also emphasized their significant role in creating delectable and healthy snacks. 13 stalls showcased a delightful spread of creations including Milletacious Bars, Ragi Brownies, Multi-grain Namkeen, Ragi Ladoos, Bajra Ladoos, Bajra Cutlets, and Barnyard Millet Kheer with Khajuria, all skillfully prepared by our talented students. This event served as an illuminating showcase of the numerous health benefits that come from incorporating these grains into our diets, ultimately contributing to improved well-being and nutrition.
Millets, grains known for their exceptional nutritional richness, were at the forefront of this initiative. With benefits ranging from supporting heart health to diabetes prevention, aiding in weight management, and reducing inflammation, millets represent a powerhouse of nutrients. The competition was dedicated to the creativity and commitment of the students involved. Their efforts resulted in a diverse array of nutritious snacks that highlighted the versatility and potential of millets in modern cuisine. From savory to sweet, the offerings demonstrated that incorporating millets into daily diets can be both delicious and healthful.
Chairman of Quantum University, Mr Ajay Goyal stated, “Through this competition, we are showcasing the talents of our students, while also disseminating crucial information about millets. It underscores how small dietary changes can lead to significant improvements in overall health.” Dr Vivek Kumar, Vice Chancellor at Quantum University said, “The fusion of culinary expertise with a focus on health is a remarkable step forward. It’s an honor to be a part of an initiative that not only educates but also inspires healthier eating habits.” The event culminated in an auspicious moment of declaring the winners, where students showcased their exceptional skills. The winner of the Millet-based Food Competition went to the team behind the delectable Ragi Nachos Chaat, skillfully prepared by Gaurav Joshi, Rajat Narayan Lal Karm, Daksh Tomar, and Gorav Sharma from BHM 1st year. The Runner Up title was secured by the team behind the nutritious Multi Grain Katli, crafted by Tusi Bhardwaj, Aastha Kaushal, Kanchan, and Gulista from B. Sc N&D 3rd year and Msc N&D 2nd year. Additionally, a Consolation prize was awarded to the creators of the delightful Bajra Bhalla Chaat, Sumit Vashist, Kumari Divya Bharti, and Ishika Rana from B. Sc N&D 1st year. Mr. Ajay Goyal, while congratulating the winners, commended their outstanding efforts and unique culinary skills.
As September is celebrated as Nutrition Month, Quantum University upholds this tradition by organizing various health campaigns and events each year to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition in overall well-being.
